Deep within the mesmerizing rolling hills, dwelt a young shepherd. His life was essentially unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was mainly to care for his herd of ewes.

Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the wind across the lone tree on the hilltop were his only associates. Day upon day, guarding his responsibilities instilled in him a notion of calm satisfaction.

Yet, there were occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long for fellowship. In one such instance from sheer boredom, the shepherd boy devised a naughty scheme.

Tales of wild beasts hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy decided to used this fear and played a prank on the townsfolk.

One day he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but found nothing threatening.

The boy giggled at the puzzle on their faces. This trick persisted for a couple of more days. Yet, one day, a real wolf did come here to prey the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.

Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of false alarms.

His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once broken, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as appropriate today as it was anciently.
